Kenai Working on Commercial Cannabis Regulations

The Kenai city council will host a work session tonight discussing commercial marijuana regulations.

 

At their meeting Wednesday night, an ordinance creating a moratorium on cannabis clubs was introduced and set for public hearing January 6.

 

While there was no council discussion, Patricia Patterson took time to make a public comment on the ban.

Patterson: “I think the moratorium is a knee-jerk reaction because I think there should be a safe place for marijuana to be consumed. I think if you can sell it, especially to tourism, but they have no place to smoke it, it just sets it up to be smoked anywhere. In our parks, anyplace else.”

 

Council members invited Patterson and anyone interested in Kenai’s overall marijuana regulations to come to tonight’s work session where more discussion and public comment will take place.

 

At their December 1 marijuana work session, council member Terry Bookey questioned the amount of regulations the city is proposing.

Bookey: “I’m not sure that we need to limit the number of marijuana facilities in Kenai. I think the reality of the business plans associated with it, the reality of the cost with the facilities and the market will dictate how many facilities we have in the city of Kenai.”

 

Kenai’s work session to discuss buffers, on-site consumption, and zoning will begin at 6:00 pm in Kenai Council Chambers.
