Over $10,500 has so far been raised to help Lara Rogers-McGinnis recover after a serious head-on car accident last Monday, March 16.
She was headed south on the highway when a moving van driven by 24-year old John Poiane, driving for Continental Van Lines, lost control in snowy and icy conditions, striking McGinnis head-on.
Troopers determined Poiane was driving with a suspended license.
Brad Nelson with CES said Poiane lost control in snowy, icy conditions. It was one of two accidents in the exact same spot in less than a week.
Nelson: “And it’s typical this time of year but especially this year, with the weird weather that we’ve had this year, you’ll go through long stints of dry roads but any time there’s shade or fluctuating temperatures you can still have ice, extremely slick ice on these roads. And it’s not just in the early morning and late hours that we’re used to typically with the ice, it can be all throughout the day.”
Rogers-McGinnis is the Executive Director of the Kenai Peninsula Fair Association, and mother to two young men. She’s required facial reconstructive surgery and an operation to place pins in her knees. Her injuries included a broken femur in one leg and a broken tibia in the other, along with orthopedic injuries.
Friends say Lara is simply lucky to be alive, but faces long road to recovery. You can donate through the charitable donation site gofundme.com.
