2020 Primary Election Results Officially Certified

Results of the August 18 statewide primary election have officially been certified. Prior to election day, the Alaska Division of Elections reported more than 70,000 early votes and requests for absentee ballots.  All have officially been counted and results have been marked.

 

In races with only one candidate listed, that candidate ran unopposed.

 

United States Senator – Republican

  • Dan Sullivan – 65,257 votes, 100.00%

United States Senator – Democratic / Independence

  • Edgar Blatchford – 5,463 votes, 8.72%
  • Chris C. Cumings – 2,989 votes, 4.77%
  • Al Gross – 50,047 votes, 79.87%
  • John Wayne Howe – 4,165 votes, 6.65%

Both Howe and Gross will be on the general ballot in November, with Gross as an Independent and Howe representing the Alaskan Independence Party.

 

United States Representative – Republican

  • “John” T. Nelson – 12,344 votes, 18.08%
  • Don Young – 51,972 votes, 76.13%
  • Gerald L. “Jer” Heikes – 3,954 votes, 5.79%

United States Representative – Democratic / Independence

  • William “Bill” Hibler – 3,931 votes, 6.34%
  • Ray Sean Tugatuk – 4,858 votes, 7.83%
  • Alyse S. Galvin – 53,258 votes, 85.83%

Galvin’s campaign has been quick to celebrate the fact that this election marks the first time since the Alaska Republican Party adopted closed primaries in the early-1990s that a challenger has received more primary votes than the 47-year incumbent, Congressman Young.

 

State Senator District P – Republican

  • John R. “Bear” Cox – 1,861 votes, 46.92%
  • Gary Stevens  – 2,105 votes, 53.08%

State Senator District P – Democratic / Independence

  • Greg Madden – 2,284 votes, 100.00%

Cox had been leading the incumbent, Stevens, in the unofficial before the final votes were released.

 

State Representative District 29 – Republican

  • Benjamin E. Carpenter – 2,574 votes, 100.00%

 

State Representative District 30 – Republican

  • Ronald D. “Ron” Gillham – 1,611 votes, 58.97%
  • Gary A. Knopp – 463 votes, 16.95%
  • Kelly J. Wolf – 658 votes, 24.08%

 

State Representative District 31 – Republican

  • Sarah L. Vance – 2,417 votes, 100.00%
