ORIGINAL: The 28th Annual Homer Winter King Salmon Tournament is taking place on Saturday, April 9 where each spring, anglers take to the Kachemak Bay waters in search of King Salmon. The one-day tournament awards tens of thousands of dollars in prize money to the largest kings caught. In 2021, 1,562 fishermen and 455 boats competed with nearly $240,000 in cash and prizes awarded. The grand prize fish earned $87,027.
Jan Knutson with the Homer Chamber of Commerce told KSRM where the headquarters will be found on the Spit for this year’s event:
“They’re going to find them when you get down to the Spit, the headquarters are going to be on the Freight Dock Road. It’s where the cruise ships come in. So it’s the opposite side of the harbor from where you drive down the Spit. That’s where the headquarters are going to be. We had them there last year for the first time and it’s just a really fantastic area.”
Knutson spoke on where to launch the boat and where to park the truck and trailer:
“You’re going to launch it, again, you turn onto Freight Dock Road and right there is where there’s the launching for the boats. Right above there’s a big area where you can park your truck and your trailer. Of course, that’s on the north side of the harbor.”
There’s also free moorage:
“That’s correct. The Homer Harbor gives one night of complementary moorage to people who are bringing their own boats down. You can go to our website www.homerwinterking.com and find the form for that or you can call the harbor at (907) 235-3160 and if you want to moor your boat for more than one night, again, contact the harbor for the pricing on that.”
Also, there are additional opportunities for side tournaments and prizes offered every hour of the tournament. After the fishing lines are pulled from the water, join the festivities at the weigh-in stations by the Deep-Water Dock.
