The ASAA 3A State Volleyball Championships opened double-elimination tournament play on Thursday with first round games for Kenai, Homer and Seward representing the Southcentral Conference and the Kenai Peninsula.
All games are scheduled for the Alaska Airlines Center on the campus of UAA in Anchorage.
The Kenai Kardinals advance to the Friday winner’s-bracket, semi-final with victories over Monroe Catholic and Sitka on Thursday. Homer and Seward will need to advance through the double-elimination bracket, but still have a chance to make the championship game.
Winner’s Bracket Round- Thursday
Kenai 3 – Sitka 2
The Kenai Kardinals, following a opening sweep of Monroe, were pushed to five sets by Sitka, the #1 seed from Southeast.
Kenai wins the match by taking game five 15-12. The Kardinals dropped game one 25-27; won games two and three 25-17, 25-17; fell in game four 17-25; and closed the match 15-11 in game five.
Kenai advance to the 5:15 p.m. winner’s-bracket, semi-final on Friday to face Valdez.
Valdez 3 – Seward 1
Valdez advances to the semi-finals with a 3-1 victory over Seward downing the Seahawks 25-20,26-24, 16-25 and 25-22.
First Round Pairings and Results
Kenai 3 – Monroe 0
The Kenai Kardinals entered the 3A state tournament as the #1 seed from the Southcentral Conference sporting an 18-0 record in head-to-head matches for the season.
Monroe Catholic earned the #2 seed form the Aurora Conference based on conference tournament results.
Kenai handles Monroe in three sets 25- 11, 25-17 and 30-28. Kenai was pushed in the third set; the Kardinals record the sweep.
Kenai advances to play Sitka in the 7:00 p.m. winner’s bracket game on Thursday night at the Alaska Airlines enter. A Kardinal victory and Kenai advances to the winner’s semi-final on Friday at 5:15 p.m.. A loss and Kenai returns Friday at 3:15 in the double-back rounds.
Homer 0 – Valdez 3
Valdez, the #1 seed from the Aurora Conference, defeated Homer, #2 from Southcentral Conference, in three-straight sets 25-22, 25-20, 25-23.
Valdez advances to play Seward at 5:15 p.m. on Thursday.
Homer continues tournament play on Friday with a double-back game against Bethel at 10 a.m.
Seward 3 – Bethel 0
The Seward Seahawks, at-large berth from SCC, swept Bethel, Western #1 seed, in three-straight 25-13, 25-17, 25-19. Seward faces Valdez at 5:15 p.m. in the tournament’s winner’s round.
Sitka 3 – Nome-Beltz 0
The #1 seed from the Southeast defeated Nome-Beltz 3-0 advancing Sitka to a winner’s-bracket game against winner of Kenai vs Monroe
