The 5th annual Bike, Skate, and Scoot challenge brought out a medium sized crowd to watch just bikes and scooters compete this year.
Sen. Peter Micciche worked to start the competition 5 years ago and said it’s gone through a variety of changes since then.
Micciche: “The evolution is fascinating at first it was mostly skateboards and some bikes, went to almost exclusively bike then about 3 years ago the scooter thing started and now on scooters they’re doing back flips and all kinds of incredible tricks, we didn’t have any skateboarders this year. So its evolved quite a bit skateboards aren’t as cool, I mean sometimes you’ll see a kid carrying something to the skate park on a skateboard but they’re going to do their scooter tricking.”
He said as a skateboarder in high school he experienced discrimination against the sport and is happy to support the talented local kids.
Micciche: “Hundreds of us will go to a high school football game and hundreds of us will go to a hockey game over at the sports complex but these kids just get very little recognition and they kept their end of the deal with me years ago when I asked them not to sort of terrorize people at the mall and I’m keeping my end of the deal on doing this annual event and making sure we can support the city in any way, they already great job that they do and recognizing that these skate sports are important.”
