Students at all 42 Kenai Peninsula Borough School District schools can resume regular on-site learning starting today.
District officials say the decision to allow 7-12 grade students in the Central and Southern Kenai Peninsula schools comes a week after allowing Seward-area schools to let 7-12 grade students back to the classroom fulltime.
Pegge Erkeneff, Director of Communications, Community, and Government Relations for the Kenai Peninsula Borough School District said, “All our 7th through 12th grade students throughout the entire school district have the option to return to school 5-days a week and we really want to thank everyone who’s doing their part to limit COVID exposure. You may wear a mask or wash the hands or keep that 6 foot physical distance when possible, especially following the school mitigation plan. They seem to be working, appear to be working so well and we’re excited about that. The next steps will be bringing the several hundred students back in. We’ll be looking at when volunteers can come back in and later in February, parent teacher conferences. There’s a lot more pieces to begin putting in safely and over time.”
Also, families who would feel safer sticking with 100% remote learning still have that option. School lunches will remain free through the end of the school year. Also, bus transportation will be provided on a normal schedule, with mandatory face coverings and seating plans being put into place.
Staff and students of all ages must wear a mask at all times, and individual mitigation plans at school sites must be fully implemented and followed.
