A school bus carrying students bound for a wrestling tournament in Tanana was involved in an accident near Cantwell on Thursday. According to Alaska State Troopers, 51 students were on board the bus, and seven were treated for minor injuries.
Sources say the bus was carrying middle school wrestling teams from the Mat-Su Borough School District.
According to the AST Dispatch on the incident, Troopers responded to a single-vehicle collision near mile 176 Parks Hwy between Nenana and Cantwell. Investigation showed a School bus traveling Northbound lost control and slid hitting both shoulders, which were compacted snow. The road conditions were icy, and one bus had previously navigated the ‘S’ curve without issue, Troopers say.
The driver involved was cited for “driving at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent considering the conditions.”
Trapper Creek EMS and Cantwell EMS also assisted in the response.
