As of 9:20 am, there are 10 mushers still racing on the Iditarod trail.
Yesterday saw 13 mushers finish in Nome including Peninsula residents Paul Gebhart, Kristy Berington, Danny Seavy, and Travis Beals.
Our partners at KNOM in Nome spoke with rookie musher Katherine Keith of Kotzebue about one of her tougher nights on the trail.
Keith: “Yeah that was a tough night too out of Shaktoolik, we knew that high winds were coming, 45 miles an hour so I was trying to leave early to prevent the worst of it from coming but I didn’t make it in time so I went about halfway out and there were wind gusts about 60 miles an hour and its glare ice, it was just pushing the team all around, it was kind of scary but there was a shelter cabin there so I ended up just going to that shelter cabin and hunkering down for about 12 hours and put the dogs in the shelter cabin and waited for daylight to make another go of it.”
Keith finished 32nd yesterday.
As of this morning, Anna Berington of Kasilof finished in Nome at 39th and Monica Zappa of Kasilof left the Elim checkpoint in 49th.

Anna Berington: finished 39th
