If you’re looking to leave home for the weekend, take steps to avoid costly frozen pipes since temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing.
Soldotna’s Utilities Division Manager Rick Wood said it only takes small steps to avoid big costs.
Wood: “Well that people who have had a past history of water freezing and if they are on city sewer we recommend them to run their cold water about the size of a number 2 pencil lead, just to keep the water moving in their pipe on their service line to prevent that from freezing.”
He said residents should keep an eye on closing garage doors as they leave.
Wood: “I see several people leaving doors open to garages or their overhead doors come back up because there was something in the way of the sensors. We respond to probably half a dozen garages that are froze up every year because someone drives off and their garage door is left open and then when they come home everything is froze up and when things start thawing out they have several different leaks in there.”
Although rain is forecast later tonight(Friday), ground temperatures will not rise and there’s still potential for frozen pipes.
