Homer Electric Association customers’ rates will rise by 3.25 percent beginning February 1, 2016.

Joe Gallagher with HEA…

Gallagher: “The increase will be in the energy base rate and customer charge and the result will be an increase of $3.15 for the average HEA member using about 550 kilowatt hours a month.”

The increase was requested while HEA proceeds in a legal dispute with other railbelt utilities that move power from the Bradley Lake Hydroelectric Plant across Homer Electric’s transmission lines.

Gallagher: “We believe there should be a price paid for that, that HEA should be compensated for the power going across our system. Currently we are not being compensated and that means we’re losing about two to three million dollars annually and we cannot recover that.
