The 2016 North Star Conference Hockey Tournament crowned the Colony Knights champions, following a 3-0 Colony win over the Soldotna Stars. Both teams advance to the ASAA Large School Hockey Championships scheduled for Thursday – Saturday, February 11-13 at the Menard Arena in Wasilla.
Friday Semi-Final Results
SoHi 3 – Palmer 1
The Soldotna Stars upset the 9-0-1 Palmer Moose in the semi-final game on Friday 3-1. SoHi scored first on a Matt Dougherty goal, which Palmer answered with only :09 seconds remaining in the first period for a 1-1 tie at the intermission. SoHi took the lead on a Levi Hensley goal at 3:42 of the second and added an empty net goal by Cameron Knowlton for the 3-1 final score. Billy Yoder recorded 28 saves in goal for the Stars.
Colony 5 – Wasilla 1
The #2 seeded Knights downed Wasilla 5-1 to advance to the NSC championship game on Saturday. Colony qualifies to the ASAA State Large School Hockey Tournament.
Thursday First Round Results
SoHi 3 – Homer 2
The Soldotna Stars battled to a 3-2 first-round victory over the Homer Mariners and advance to the semi-final round on Friday. With the win, SoHi will now face the #1 seed Palmer Moose in the 7:30 p.m. game on Friday at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex. SoHi goals score by Cameron Knowlton, Levi Hensley and Jace Urban.
Wasilla 8 – Kenai 2
The Kenai Kardinals hockey team was eliminated from the single-elimination North Star Conference tournament with a 8-2 loss to the #3 seed Wasilla Warriors. Kenai goals scored by Chris Hagel and Jacob O’Brien.
Wasilla advances to play #2 seed Colony in the 5:00 p.m. Friday contest at the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex.
The single-elimination tournament includes Kenai, Soldotna, Homer, Wasilla, Colony and Palmer. Teams are seeded based on regular season records. The NSC championship game is set for Saturday at 4:15 p.m. and the two teams in the championship game will represent the North Star Conference at the ASAA Large School State Hockey Championships.
