This week marks the halfway point for the Alaska legislature’s regular 90-day session with the state budget deficit at the forefront of ongoing work.
The House is working toward finalizing its version of the state operating budget and a Senate committee is looking at options to curb and contain state Medicaid costs.
There have been several options for new state revenue put on the table but it remains unclear which peices lawmakers will instate to combat Alaska’s multibillion-dollar budget deficit.
Many continue legislators continue to push for more budget cuts and other proposals include income and sales taxes, the use of the Alaska Permanent Fund earnings, along with changes to the state’s oil and gas tax credit system and the criminal justice system.
