Today the University of Alaska Board of Regents voted 9-2 to oppose a state Senate bill that would allow Alaskans to carry concealed weapons on campuses statewide.

The resolution approved Friday says in the legislation’s current form it would prevent the university from responding to high-risk and conflict situations on campuses.

University of Alaska President Jim Johnsen wrote in a release that as written the bill limits the board’s ability to govern the university.

The university system has proposed six amendments to the bill, including requests to limite concealed weapons in dorms and health and counseling facilities or during disciplinary issue discussions.

Another proposal is requiring concealed carry permits of students or employees who choose to carry on campus.
