Alaska Airlines has cancelled 41 flights and travel on Grant Aviation and Ravn Alaska has also been impacted because of volcanic ash in the air from Pavlof Volcano’s continuing eruption.

Alaska Airlines wrote in a release that travel to and from six Alaskan cities, including all flights operating to and from Fairbanks have been cancelled due to an ash cloud that is moving north at up to 75 mph.

Volcanic ash can cause plane engines to shut down.

The Alaska Airlines cancellations alone may affect up to 3,300 passengers traveling to areas including Bethel, Kotzebue, Nome, Barrow and Deadhorse.

Travel between Anchorage and Kenai has not been impacted according to Kenai Municipal Airport Manager Mary Bondurant.

Grant Aviation and Ravn Alaska have reported that some of their flights traveling to areas near Cold Bay and the Unalaska areas but exact flights affected were not immediately available.

The Alaska Volcano Observatory says they cannot predict what Pavlof will do.

There is a potential that more flights could be affected.
