The next phase of work on the Capitol Building in Juneau is set to begin the day after the regular legislative session ends and will make the front entrance temporarily inaccessible. That raises the question: where will a potential special session be held?

Building manager Jeff Goodell says as long as there is some sort of session under way, there will be a public access to the building.

Speaker of the House Mike Chenault…

Spkr. Chenault: “If the Capitol Building is available, I believe we ought to have it here in the Capitol Building simply because we have offices, staff here, it’s more conducive to do the state’s work. If the building is being renovated, as some may know the outside of it is being stiffened for earthquake protection and re bricked, we could extend the construction season for another year which would cost us considerably more money, so if the building is unavailable I think we should have it somewhere else.”

The Senate has already passed a resolution asking Governor Bill Walker that if a special session is called, it’s scheduled in community on the road system.

Goodell says if everything goes as planned with the current session ending on time, people will be out of the building and workers will be setting up the crane by May 2.
