GCI Reports Statewide Outage After Cable Cut in Anchorage

At around 1:00 pm Thursday GCI posted to Facebook that an outage was affecting services statewide due to a main cable that was damaged in Anchorage.

David Morris with GCI…

Morris: “At approximately 11:30 this morning, a contractor of someone, we don’t quite know who yet cut through a fiber optic cable on Tudor Road, it was 204 strands of individual fiber cable.”

GCI crews are working to fuse that back together, meaning they must splice approximately 408 tiny cables.

Morris says at this time it is unclear how many customers have been affected statewide…

Morris: “It has affected services across the state but not in a consistent, easily discernible fashion. In other words, depending on the type of service it could be fine in one part of the state, one part of the city, and not in another part. And the same way with geography, it affects some geographic areas more so than others.”

He says GCI hopes to have services fully restored as soon as possible.
