Unofficial election results show Soldotna voters have approved the creation of a Home Rule Charter Commission. The question, “Shall a Charter Commission be Elected to Prepare a Proposed Charter?” was approved by 243 yes votes. 162 Soldotna residents voted no.
While unofficial results show a 81 vote difference between support and opposition, there are still 117 absentee, question, and special needs ballots to be counted.
City Manager Mark Dixson detailed the next step if the commission is certified.
Dixson: “The next step will be to set up a meeting for the commissioners to meet, to elect a chair person for the commission, and also to set a schedule. We will try to gather as many home rule charters as we can for them to review and be available if they have any questions or need.”
The City of Soldotna Canvass Board will meet on Monday, May 16, 2016 to count the absentee, question, and special needs ballots. The official election results will not be certified by the city council until the May 25 meeting.
Ballots that are received prior to the Canvass Board meeting on May 16, 2016 that are postmarked on or before May 10, 2016 will be counted.
Unofficial results show that of the nine Home Rule Charter Commission candidates on the ballot, the two with the least amount of votes so far are Jerry Farrington,(83), and Roberta “Bobbie” O’Neill(138).
That means the Home Rule Charter Commission would be comprised of:
RoseMary Reeder
Dale Bagley
Scott Davis
Linda Hutchings
Karen “Penny” Vadla
Linda Murphy
Timothy Cashman
