The Alaska legislature’s new proposal to purchase a former Anchorage midtown bank building was not received well by the city’s assembly.
On Tuesday night, Anchorage Assembly members voted seven to four supporting a non-binding resolution opposing the legislature’s proposal to buy the building at Benson and Minnesota.
The resolution’s sponsor, Patrick Flynn who represents Downtown, says Anchorage’s land-use plan calls for government offices to be located in the central business district.
Assembly member Eric Croft, who previously represented the Spenard area in the State House, joked that lawmakers might not be welcomed.
Anc. Asmb. Croft: “We’ve just kind of cleaned up Spenard, I’d hate to go backwards. *Laughter*”
South Anchorage Assemblyman Bill Evans questioned if the controversial topic was even something that they should weigh in on.
Anc. Asmb. Evans: “I just think having this body officially weigh-in on where they should be locating this very divisive building is a mistake.”
