Big Lake Lions Hockey Tournament Closes With SoHi & Kenai Dropping Saturday Games

The 2016 Big Lake Lions Classic Hockey Tournament, featured three days of bracketed, hockey tournament action at the Big Lake Arena in Houston.

 

Saturday Game Results

SoHi 4 – Colony 7

The Stars fell in the tournament’s third-place contest 7-4 to the Colony Knights.  SoHi lead 2-0 early in the first period with a power-play goal from Levi Hensley and a short-handed goal by Wyatt Medcoff.  SoHi added goals by Medcoff and Alex Montague.  Goalie Billy Yoder turned-away 39 of 46 shots.

Kenai 4 – Palmer 9

 

Friday Game Results

SoHi 1 – Monroe 3

The Stars managed only a single goal in the tournament semi-final against the Monroe Rams, falling 3-1 to Monroe.  Ethan Brown scored in the third period; goalie Billy Yoder stopped 25 of 28 shots.

Kenai 8 – Bartlett 7

The Kardinals recorded an 8-7 victory over Bartlett to advance to the fourth-place game on Saturday.  In the win, Kenai rallied from an early 3-0 deficit and scored the game-winning goal with only :36 seconds remaining, as Jacob O’Brien tallied the game winner.  Levi Mese recorded a three goal, hat trick; Jonathan Hawkins scored twice; Matt Zorbas and Nate Bieser each added single goals.

 

Thursday Game Results:

SoHi 5 – Palmer 4

The Soldotna Stars recorded  5-4 non-conference victory over the Palmer Moose, just seven days after the two teams tied 3-3 in North Star Conference play.  In the tournament’s first round, SoHi built a 4-2 lead into the third period, only to have the Moose tie the game with a pair of third period goals to again send a Star vs Moose contest into overtime.

In the overtime period, no team managed a goal.

In the tournament format an overtime shootout is allowed, contrary to regular season hockey.  Galen Brantley III scored the game winner for the Stars in the overtime shootout. Brantley recorded three goals for the game; Parker Lockwood and Alex Montague added SoHi goals.  Final score: SoHi 5, Palmer 4.

Kenai 1 – Wasilla 11

The Kardinals managed only a single goal by Levi Mese in the game’s first period.  Kenai was outshot 54 to 21 in the contest.

Colony 15 – Bartlett 2

Monroe 5 – Houston 1
