Powerful storms are expected to impact much of Alaska this week, bringing strong winds, blowing snow and freezing rain.

The National Weather Service says the first of three expected storms dissipated early Tuesday morning after moving over the Bering Strait.

A stronger storm is expected to bring winds gusting to at least 50 mph and some blowing snow Wednesday, as well as freezing rain to the Yukon River Delta and Saint Lawrence Island.

A third, more powerful storm with winds gusting at 60 mph is expected to reach the Bering Sea Thursday, moving north on Friday. The Weather Service says the storm could bring more snow and rain to the state’s western coast.

Forecasters say the storms are expected to create “a messy situation out there.”
