Non-conference pairings opened a full week of high school basketbal with the Kenai Kardinal boys defeating Ninilchik and the Soldotna High girls and boys both recording victories over Seward.
Kenai Boys 80 – Ninilchik 62
The Kenai boys jumped-out to an early 21-11 , first quarter lead and control the scoreboard throughout for an 80-62 non-divisional win over the 1A Ninilchik Wolverines. The Kardinals were lead by Luke Beiser and Tristen Landry, both recorded 19 points; four Kardinals scored in double figures. Ninilchik’s top scorer was Tyler Presley with 19 points; Garrett Koch and Austin White each scored 15 for the game.
The Kardinal boys travel to Anchorage for the Alaska Prep Shootout at Dimond High School with games running Thursday through Saturday, January 12-14. SoHi Girls 43 – Seward 27
The Soldotna girls improved to 6-0 on the early season with a 43-27 non-conference victory over the Seward Seahawks on Tuesday. SoHi pulled away in the second quarter on the strength of a 17 point quarter for a 24-9 halftime advantage. Britney Blossom lead all scorers with 15 points for the Stars; Danica Schmidt added 13 points for SoHi.
SoHi Boys 45 – Seward 27
The Soldotna boys, on the strength of a stifling half-court trapping defense, recorded a 45-27 victory over 3A opponent Seward on Tuesday. The Stars held Seward to a lone field goal in the third quarter and built an 18-point advantage in the second half. Sam McElroy and Derek Evans each scored 10 points for the Stars.
The SoHi girls and boys teams travel to Fairbanks for the Joe T Basketball Tournament, a round robin tournament with games Thursday through Saturday, January 12-14.
