A leak in an underwater pipeline continues to spew natural gas into Alaska’s Cook Inlet and a second environmental group has given required 60-day notice that it will sue the pipeline’s owner.
The gas was first spotted Feb. 7 bubbling from an 8-inch pipeline owned by Hilcorp Alaska, LLC.
The company’s consultants say tiny amounts of natural gas are dissolving in the water.
The company says there’s likely minimal effect on marine life and that the leak will be repaired when sea ice departs and it’s safe for divers to make repairs.
The Center for Biological Diversity says the leaking gas is a threat to endangered beluga whales.
The Tucson, Arizona-based group gave formal notice Monday it will sue Hilcorp for alleged violations of federal environmental and pipeline safety laws.
