The Alaska North Stars 16-U Girls earned the USA Hockey Tier II 2A National Championship on Monday with a championship game 3-1 victory over the Vermont Shamrocks.
The North Stars represent players from throughout Alaska competing in the U-16 girls division; the North Stars representing Alaska as Alaska state champions for 2017. Local skater Sierra Longfellow was a member of the 2017 team.
The North Star girls dropped their first two games at the national tournament in Troy, Michigan. The North Stars then ran the table with four, consecutive victories for the national title.
The North Stars are only the seventh Alaska team to claim a national hockey title; and the first Alaska youth team to win a USA Hockey national championship since the Alaska All Stars 14-U girls in 2013.
