Alaska legislative leaders say they’re unsure what steps, if any, may be taken after being met with silence in their demands that a state representative apologize for comments on abortion that they said were offensive.
On Friday, one House member suggested that the chamber should consider censuring Rep. David Eastman. But House Speaker Bryce Edgmon said Monday that nothing had been determined.
Eastman infuriated fellow lawmakers with comments he made last week about abortion, saying there are people in Alaska who try to get pregnant to “get a free trip to the city.”
The Wasilla Republican has expressed concern about use of state funds and Medicaid for abortions.
He ignored the subject on the House floor Monday, using an opportunity for speeches instead to discuss a mine in his district.
