Fairbanks police continue to seek the motive of a heavily armed man who opened fire on officers and was killed.

Five officers early Monday responded to reports of a man armed with a rifle and four returned fire, killing 21-year-old Matthew Stover of Northway.

Police say Stover wore body armor and a bulletproof mask. He fired an “AR-style” rifle and carried a 9mm handgun and about 400 rounds on his body and in his truck.

A witness spotted Stover near a restaurant. A short time later, Fairbanks Correctional Center staff noticed Stover and his truck parked near an ice arena.

Police from 100 yards turned on emergency lights and called out to the truck with a loudspeaker. Police say Stover ran toward officers, firing his rifle, and was shot.
