Oilers Final Home Game Set For Saturday: Oilers Drop A Pair In Friday Doubleheader

The Peninsula Oilers close the home, regular season on Saturday, July 29th with a series ending contest against the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks at Coral Seymour Memorial Park.  Saturday is Fan Appreciation Day and a Free Admission Day at the Park.  Game time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.

The Peninsula Oilers produced 14 hits against the Chugiak-Eagle River Chinooks in a pair of games Friday, dropping game one 6-5 and game two 6-2.

 

Game One: Oilers 5 – Chinooks 6

The Oilers stranded a season-high 18 men on base in their game one loss to the Chinooks. The front end of the seven inning doubleheader wrapped up in extra innings with the Oilers falling in nine innings 6-5.

In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Oilers loaded the bases; however, failed to score as the Chinooks induced an inning-ending double play.  With one out, Jack Bauer lined-out to second and Mikey Hoehner was caught off third for the final out of the inning.

In the top of the 9th inning tied at four, Chinooks catcher Justin Gomez hit a two-run home run off Oilers relief pitcher Preston Plovanich to give the Chinooks a 6-4 lead.

The Oilers responded in the bottom of the 9th inning as right fielder Thomas Ruddy hit an RBI triple to cut the Chinook lead to one.  Ruddy, representing the tying run  at third, was left stranded when Mikey Hoehner struck out to end the game.

Final Score: Chinooks 6 – Oilers 5

 

Game Two: Chinooks 6 – Oilers 2

The Chinooks bats chased Oilers starter Trent Paddon after four innings; Paddon allowed four runs on six hits in a 6-2 loss to the Chinooks.

Third baseman Nathan Webb provided both runs for the Oilers, hitting a two-run double in the bottom of the 5th. With the tying run at first base, Ruddy grounded into a game-ending 1-6-3 double-play in the bottom of the seventh inning .

Chinooks starter Daniel Sweeney earned the win; Preston White recorded the save, throwing two, scoreless innings in relief.

Final Score: Chinooks 6 – Oilers 2

 

ABL Standings 

The Oilers and Chinooks are both currently 17-24 on the season following the sweep on Friday, still in pursuit of one of two remaining playoff seeds for the upcoming ABL Top of the World Series which begins August 2nd. The Oilers close the regular season with a two-game series against the Anchorage Glacier Pilots on Sunday and Monday at Mulcahy Park in Anchorage.

The Mat-Su Miners and Anchorage Bucs stand 1 & 2 in the ABL with the regular season ending on Tuesday, August 1st.
