The 2018 ASAA 1A State Basketball Championships opened first round action on Wednesday with the Ninilchik girls falling to Davis Ramoth Wolves. The Nikolaevsk boys upset #2 seed Kake Thunderbirds.
Nikolaevsk 46 – Kake 43
The Nikolaevsk Warriors recorded the biggest upset of the 1A state tournament’s first day with a 46-43 victory over the Kake Thunderbirds from Southeast Alaska.
After an evenly played first half, with Nikolaevsk up 21-20; the Warriors twice built leads of seven and eight points only to have the Thunderbirds battle back. Down 40-37 after an 11-point run by Kake, the Warriors held-off a final run for the victory. Kalenik Molodih and J.D. Mumey lead the Warriors with 12 points apiece.
Nikolaevsk advances to the championship bracket to face Nunamiut in the 9:30 a.m. contest on Thursday at the Alaska Airlines Center.
Ninilchik 28 – Davis Ramoth (Selawik) 35
The Wolverine girls battled the #3 seeded Davis Ramoth (Selawik) wolves in the 1A state tournament’s first contest, falling to the Wolves 35-28. Three point shooting proved the difference as the Wolverines shot 1 of 13 from behind the arc and the Wolves shot 5 of 14. DeeAnn White lead the Wolverines with 21 points.
Ninilchik continues tournament play on Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. game against the loser of the Shaktoolik vs Alak game.
