The Alaska baseball season, whether Little League, high school or Peninsula Oilers, has yet to call “Play Ball” in the Spring of 2018; however, college baseball teams are finding favorable conditions for spring ball.
Former Soldotna High School and Peninsula Oilers baseball player Jake Darrow is making the most of the warm Arizona climate, leading the Eastern Arizona Gila Monsters in batting average [.426], RBI [17], doubles [4] and slugging percentage [.481].
Darrow also ranks third in the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference with a .426 batting average.
Darrow has collected 46 hits in 31 games with only six strikeouts. Darrow also has recorded eight stolen bases in 10 attempts in the early season for the Monsters.
Area high school baseball practices are underway, with practice sessions primarily in gyms and the game schedules still dependent on spring break-up and field conditions.
Peninsula Oilers baseball begins in early June with Opening Day at Coral Seymour Memorial Park scheduled for June 7th against the Anchorage Bucs.
