Calvert Leads Kenai Girls To Division II State Championship

Author: Coach Dan Gensel |

In their first year in Division II cross country running, the Kenai Kardinal girls raced to the Division II girls team championship and were lead by the girls individual champion, KCHS senior Jaycie Calvert.

Calvert, in the DII girls race, outran the field in the 5-K event posting a time of 19:22 and defeating Homer’s Autumn Daigle (defending 2017 champion) by 24 seconds.  Kenai adds to the Kardinal trophy case with a Division II team title to go with the Division I championship won in 2015.  Calvert’s individual championship was the second-straight for a peninsula runner and the first for a Kardinal since Allie Ostrander in 2014.

The Kardinals placed five runners in the top-16 including: Calvert, 1st; Logan Satathite in fifth, Brooke Satathite in sixth, Leah Fallon in eighth and Summer Foster in 16th.

The Kardinal boys placed fifth in the team scoring.  Maison Dunham placed sixth in 16:46.  Joe Hamilton finished 22nd and Tucker Mueller, 25th.

In Division I, The Soldotna Star girls placed eighth in the team scoring.  Freshman Jordan Strausbaugh lead SoHi with a 16th place finish in a time of 20:00.  The SoHi boys finished seventh overall, ahead of Region III champion Colony.  Mekbeb Dembrock finished 16th with a time of 16:57.  Bradley Walters placed 23rd.
