Game Recap (provided by Coach Kenny Leaf)
” The Academy opened up with an uncharacteristic early goal in the 9th minute when junior captain Isaac Johnson broke free along the right wing and slotted a a perfect pass to senior Linnaea Dohse to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Birchwood answered 10 minutes later when Braden Palmer gathered the ball at the top of his own penalty area and raced through Cook Inlet’s defense to score the equalizer. Less than a minute later, Johnson again broke around the right side and this time found freshman Noah Castenholz at the near post to beat goalkeeper Isaiah Orr and take a 2-1 lead. Birchwood, however, answered in the 26th minute when Jackson Hanson picked up a loose ball in the penalty area and beat senior goalkeeper Lucas Cragg to tie the game. The second half produced several chances for both sides, but no goals. Cook Inlet’s defense, led by captain Eddie Erickson, repeatedly turned back the Warrior attack and found space to maintain possession in the midfield. Central midfielders Annika Castenholz and Caden Warren worked tirelessly to maintain possession against the athleticism of Birchwood. At the end of regulation, the score remained knotted at 2-2. Early in the second 5-minute overtime, Linnaea Dohse found herself on the end of a cross from Genna Nelson and hammered it home for what proved to be the game winner and her fifth goal of the season. “That’s EXACTLY why I have her there,” said Coach Leaf.”
Cook Inlet advances to face #1 seed Su-Valley on Friday, October 5th in the 2:30 p.m. game in Palmer.
