Hockey Series Closes With SoHi Victory Over Palmer & Kenai Falling to Colony

A full three days of conference and non-conference hockey closed-out on Saturday with the Soldotna Stars downing Palmer 4-1 and the Kenai Kardinals falling 5-1 to the Colony Knights.

 

SoHi 4 – Palmer 1

The Soldotna Stars Trent Powell recorded a three-goal, hat trick against the Palmer Moose in a 4-1 victory for the Stars in Railbelt Conference hockey on Saturday.

Powell scored the first goal on a power play in the first period.  Powell added a second period goal for a 2-0 SoHi lead.  In the third period, Palmer scored to close the score to 2-1 Stars; then Powell added his third goal to push the Stars to a 3-1 advantage.  A final power play goal by Brier Books staked the Stars to a 4-1 lead.  Corbin Wirz recorded 12 saves on 13 shots in goal for SoHi. The Stars out-shot Palmer 40-13.

SoHi Game Schedule Change: SoHi will travel to Homer on Wednesday, January 15th to face the Mariners in Railbelt showdown for first place.  The Stars will have a fundraiser at the Orca Theater on Thursday, January 16th.

 

Colony 5 – Kenai 1

The Colony Knights, from Division 1 hockey, defeated Kenai 5-1 at the Kenai Multi-Purpose Arena on Saturday.  The Knights lead 1-0 after one period; 3-1 after two periods and 5-1 at the final buzzer.  Colony finishes 3-0 on the weekend including a 7-5 victory over previously unbeaten Homer on Friday in Homer.

Kenai’s next contest will be a Railbelt Conference home game against the Homer Mariners on Saturday, January 18th.
