The Soldotna Stars hockey team got a measure of revenge on the home ice of the Homer Mariners on Homer’s Senior Night recording a last-minute, game-winning goal for a 4-3 Railbelt Conference win on Wednesday in front of a raucous Mariner crowd.
The Stars improve to 4-1 in the Railbelt; Homer drops its first conference game and stands at 5-1-1. The Mariners, earlier in the regular season, recorded an overtime 4-3 decision against the Stars.
SoHi 4 – Homer 3
Trent Powell netted the game-winner with only :40 seconds remaining in regulation pushing the Stars to a 4-3 win over Homer on Wednesday. Powell scored on a short-handed goal with an assist from Wyatt Medcoff.
Following a scoreless first period, Medcoff opened the scoring with a goal just :26 seconds into the second period. Homer answered with goals by Ethan Pitzman on a power-play and a goal by Isaiah Nevak to stake the Mariners to a 2-1 advantage. Medcoff answered with his second goal of the contest coming in the final minute of the second period (14:11) on a 5 on 3 power-play for the Stars.
In the third period, SoHi regained the lead on an unassisted Dylan Walton goal midway through the third. Aiden Ross re-tied the game for the Mariners with under five minutes remaining in regulation.
Powell’s late short-handed goal capped the scoring. In net for the Stars Josh Tree recorded 26 saves on 29 shots; SoHi put 26 shots on Homer goalie Keegan Strong.
