Skyline and Hideout trails, and the Fuller Lakes trail segment between Lower and Upper Fuller Lakes on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge are again open to the public following their closure due to damage incurred during the 2019 Swan Lake Fire.
Refuge Manager Andy Loranger, in a statement: “Safety of our visitors is always our number one priority, and extensive work was needed to ensure that on several Refuge trails in the aftermath of the Swan Lake Fire. The Refuge trail crew has done outstanding work over the last two months, and we are thrilled that these popular trails are again open.”
Surprise Creek Trail and portions of Kenai River and Seven Lakes Trails remain closed due to fire damage, pending additional repair work this summer. For more information on recreational facility closures due to the Swan Lake Fire, residents are advised to visit the Refuge website.
Please remember that hazards remain within the burn area including fire-weakened standing trees that may fall without warning and deep ash pits holding residual heat
capable of causing severe burns. The public is also advised that construction activities along the Sterling Highway adjacent to the Skyline Trail trailhead are currently planned in July and may briefly affect access to the trail.
