Campfire Restrictions Lifted For Western Peninsula State Parks And KNWR

Due to the progression of the fire season and current and predicted weather patterns, dispersed campfires are now allowed on the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge and Alaska State Parks on the western Kenai Peninsula, effective immediately.

The previous closure restricting campfires to established rings or enclosed metal grates within developed recreational facilities, issued on June 5, is rescinded.

Howie Kent from the Division of Forestry warns against being careless with campfires: “We’ve got some pretty cool weather here for the weekend forecast, but just a good reminder for folks who are going to want to have campfires: that’s fine, keeping them less than three-foot in diameter is going to be very key. Keep water and hand-tools nearby, and attending your fire is really going to be important. As we get into next week, we’re going to start seeing some warmer, drier conditions, so just be aware of that and just have a good, safe weekend. Make sure you stay in attendance with your campfires.”
