In a battle for an automatic berth to the Alaska Alliance of Baseball state tournament, the Alaska 20 Twins downed East Anchorage 18-11 for a much-needed four points in the ABL American Division standings.
The Twins improve to 4-4 with 20 points in the American Division and currently stand in second in the division behind South Anchorage. The top two teams earn automatic berths to the state tournament.
Twins 18 – East 11
The Alaska 20 Twins opened with a four-run, first inning which was highlighted by a lead-off home run by Harrison Metz. The Twins added four runs in the second inning for an 8-0 lead. The second inning featured a double by Metz, three hits and three base-on-balls. In the first four innings for the Twins, the top five batters in the lineup batted in each of the first four innings.
The Twins lead 8-0 after two innings, added one in the third, four runs in the fourth and four runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth inning. East never lead scoring two in the third and six runs in the fourth inning. East added three runs in the sixth inning.
The Twins used four pitchers, monitoring pitch counts with a pair of league games on the schedule on Tuesday. Sam Berry opened with two innings, allowing two earned runs. Harrison Metz threw 1 2/3 innings and allowed six runs; Tanner Ussing relieved Metz with a two-inning outing, allowing three runs. Davey Belger closed for 1 1/3 innings and allowed no runs.
At the plate for the Twins, Harrison Metz recorded four hits; Davey Belger recorded two hits, two walks and a sac bunt; Karl Wickstrom reached safely five times, all on base-on-balls.
