The Alaska Department of Transportation provided a broad update on Wednesday to discuss each major road project throughout the state. The Kenai Peninsula is home to a great deal of development, both short-term and long-term.

On the Sterling Highway, rehabilitation is taking place throughout the season from Skilak Lake to Sterling.

  • Work is complete on the Sterling Highway between MP 58 and MP 79.
  • Drivers should be aware of crews performing daily watering of the grass seed from MP 65 to MP 58.

Also on the Sterling Highway, expect construction throughout the season from MP 45 to 60.

  • Beginning Monday, July 27, drivers should expect flagging operations near the Sterling Highway at MP 47. Expect delays of five to ten minutes from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Crews are performing drilling operations and clearing activities.
  • Drivers should be aware of crews and equipment entering and exiting the Sterling Highway at Bean Creek Road and Juneau Creek Road.
  • Hikers on Bean Creek Trail and Resurrection Pass Trail should be aware of equipment and crews near the trail system.

On Beaver Loop Road, general road improvements are taking place as well as the construction of a pedestrian pathway, with construction throughout the season.

  • Crews will be watering seed and performing other construction work through the end of July.
  • Drivers should expect occasional minor delays. Please drive with caution and follow all posted signs.

The Kenai Spur Highway is seeing construction throughout the season near Sports Lake to Swires Road.

  • The pedestrian pathway is paved and open for pedestrian use. Work is still ongoing, so drivers should be aware of flagging operations and temporary detours.
  • Four lanes of traffic with a center turn lane are striped and open for traffic.
  • Crews are placing topsoil along the pathway and conducting striping work.
  • The speed limit is posted at 45 MPH, and temporary reduced speed limits may be present at times.
  • Drivers should be aware of construction vehicles, lane shifts, and flagging operations.

Through November, on the Sterling Highway, shoulder widening is taking place from MP 97 to 118.

  • Between 7:00am and 7:00pm, crews will be doing environmental maintenance and cleanup in the work area.
  • Throughout the summer, drivers should be aware of crews working along the shoulder and water truck activities.
  • Please be aware of construction vehicles, follow all posted signage, and be extra careful when driving at night in the project area as a high number of moose have been sighted along the project corridor.

Information about other projects has been made available online at AlaskaNavigator.org.
