High school football, volleyball and cross country running for athletes in Fairbanks schools will continue practice and will be allowed to hold competitions following a 6-1 vote by the Fairbanks North Star Borough school board on Monday night.

Discussion on conducting extra-curricular activities while schools are open only to remote learning was heard by board members and presenters, including ASAA Executive Director Billy Strickland providing statistics on school activities positive affect on the mental, physical, and academic health of students overall.

According to Bruce Cech at 820 Sports in Fairbanks, fall sports will continue in the Fairbanks school district as long as the covid numbers do not get into the red zone and the programs follow the mandates put together by the Alaska Schools Activities Association.  The high school football competitive season will open on August 21-22 with week one contests.

The Soldotna Stars are scheduled to travel to West Valley for football on Friday, August 28 and the Kenai Kardinals are tentatively scheduled to play Monroe in Fairbanks on Saturday, August 29th.
