The opening weekend of high school football in Fairbanks was followed by the first positive case of COVID-19 for a high school athlete and the first quarantines resulting from exposure during a sporting event in Alaska.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska (KTVF) – The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District released the following statement after reports surfaced of a high school athlete testing positive for COVID-19:
The Fairbanks North Star Borough School District was notified Monday afternoon that a student athlete tested positive for COVID-19. The student played in Saturday evening’s football game between Lathrop and West Valley High Schools.
Players, coaches and other individuals involved in the Lathrop and West Valley football programs have been notified to quarantine for 14-days. Individuals in quarantine are asked to monitor for symptoms and contact their health care provider if they become symptomatic. Additional quarantine and/or isolation times will be determined on a case by case basis.
CDC and DHSS define close contact for COVID-19 as someone who has interacted with a case-positive person within 6ft for a cumulative duration of 15 or more minutes.
Public Health has been notified and will coordinate with the district to conduct contact tracing. At this time, football at the other district high schools will continue and will follow current safety protocols.
We are appreciative of the athlete’s family for notifying school officials so the district could act quickly to inform others who were involved. While we cannot disclose personal information or details about this specific case, we can direct the public to additional information on the CDC and DHSS health guidelines.
