The City of Soldotna will hold a public hearing regarding spending $1.5 million to adopt the city’s plans for upgrading the Soldotna Regional Sports Complex. The discussion will take place during their City Council meeting on Wednesday, August 26.

The funding had initially been discussed when the Council approved the capital funds plan for fiscal years 2021 through 2025. Each project in that plan must still be debated and approved on an individual basis.

Soldotna Public Works Director Kyle Kornelis gave a report to the Council during their July 22 meeting: “The Sports Center major maintenance projects. New exterior doors, correcting the front entry to be more user friendly and public friendly to have a public office there, getting rid of the popcorn ceiling above the bleachers that has really been problematic, some retrofit and remodel in the showers and locker rooms that have aged. This was a result of a comprehensive look at that building that is aging and does need some work.”

Ordinance 2020-019 calls for $1.5 million to be spent, after having officially engaged Burkhart Croft Architects to produce a design study report and professional cost estimates. According to their report: “The Soldotna Regional Sports Complex is an aging facility with maintenance issues and code deficiencies. The goal of renovation is to revitalize the facility, address code deficiencies, and improve operations.”

The public is invited to attend City Council meetings in-person, but the city requests that attendees wear face coverings, practice good hygiene, and not show up if showing symptoms of being sick. City Council meetings are broadcast live via the City’s website at soldotna.org/streaming. While in-person testimony will be taken during the Regular and Special meetings of the City Council, due to the limited space in Council Chambers, all interested persons are encouraged to participate via Zoom Webinar or to submit written comments in advance of the meeting.

Persons who wish to submit written comments may send comments to [email protected], please contact the City Clerk’s Office at (907) 262-9107 for details on how to join the webinar meeting.
