SoHi Football Grounds Mariners In Stars Season Opener

Eleven months after finishing the 2019 regular season undefeated, the Soldotna Stars football team ran over the Homer Mariners with six rushing touchdowns in a 42-6 victory over the Mariners.

Welcome to 2020.

 

The Stars first game of the 2020 season rang familiar with Stars fans; in-spite-of, the Stars graduating every starter from 2019 and twenty, Division II First Team All Star selections, the 2020 version of SoHi football dominated on offense and stifled the Mariner defense.

 

SoHi 42 – Homer 6

The Stars and Mariners battled basically even through the first quarter in Saturday’s 42-6 SoHi victory.

SoHi scored first with a two-play drive for 54 yards and a 36-yard touchdown run by fullback Austin Escott–the first of five touchdowns for Escott.

Homer answered with a 97-yard drive midway through the first quarter and trailed 7-6 after one quarter.

SoHi scored two minutes into the second quarter on a one-play drive, with a 92-yard run by Escott.  Both offenses stumbled in the fist half; SoHi recorded two fumbles and Homer notched two interceptions and a fumble.

The first half ended 14-6 SoHi.

The Stars dominated on both sides of the ball in the second half with SoHi scoring on four-straight possessions and the Star defense holding Homer’s four drives to a pair of punts and a pair of drives ending on downs.

Josh Heiber ran 67 yards for the first score of the third quarter.  Escott carried 61 yards for a touchdown and added a 24 yard touchdown in the third quarter.  SoHi closed the scoring with a 65-yard touchdown run by Escott.  For the game, Austin Escott recorded 270 yards just on the five touchdown runs.  For the game, Escott rushed for 312 yards on only ten carries.
