The 2020 ASAA State Cross Country Running Championships, featuring Division I, Division II and Division III races for both girls and boys, crowned individual champions, but no teams champions at the re-vamped, covid protocol meet at Kincaid Park on Saturday in Anchorage.
Kenai’s Jayna Boonstra raced to the Division II girls championship posting a winning time of 19:38.
Anchorage Christian School’s Tristian Merchant topped all male runners with a record 14:51, outracing the DII boys field.
Division I Championships
Boys: Alexander Maurer, of Service, topped the DI boys field completing the 5-kilometer course in 15:24, followed by Chugiak’s Michael Earnhart in 15:51.
SoHi’s Nathaniel Johnson placed 34th with a time of 17:52; SoHi’s Maleda Dembrock placed 39th with a time of 18:28.
Girls: West Valley’s Naomi Bailey posted a time of 17:56, over :30 seconds faster than second place finisher Ava Earl, of South Anchorage.
SoHi’s Jordan Strausbaugh lead the four state qualifiers from SoHi with a 28th place in 20:55, followed by Erika Arthur, 30th in 21:26, Jordan Ruffner, 34th in 21:51, and Katie Delker, 36th in 22:16.
Division II Championships
Boys: Anchorage Christian School’s Tristian Merchant posted a course record 14:51 to win the DII boys championship. finishing 1:42 ahead of second place David Sliwinski of Grace Christian.
Kenai’s Maison Dunham finished 8th overall with a time of 16:54. Gregory Fallon finished 11th in 17:25; followed by Joe Hamilton, 14th in 17:54 and Jack Laker placed 17th in 18:06.
Girls: Kenai was lead by Jayna Boonstra’s championship run of 19:38. Emilee Wilson finished 13th with a time of 21:42.
Division III Championships
Boys: Kael Gerlach, of Glennallen, placed 1st in the DIII boys division with a time of 17:14.
Girls: Aileen Lester, from Newhalen, topped the girls DIII field in 21:11
