The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District, faced with increasing daily positive COVID-19 counts and with the Southern Peninsula region now joining the Central Peninsula and Eastern Peninsula in the High “Red” Risk Level, announced on Monday the immediate suspension of all activities including competitions and practices for a minimum of one week.
Message from Superintendent John O’Brien:
“Due to all three main KPBSD regions being in High Risk/RED status and with recent high daily positive COVID-19 counts, all KPBSD Elementary, Middle, and High School activities are suspended immediately through Monday October 26th. We will re-evaluate on Monday morning (26th). This includes inter/intra district competition, intramurals, practices, and skill building practices.”
KPBSD, at the high school level, currently has programs waiting to continue their seasons in Region III 3A volleyball (Kenai, Nikiski, Homer and Seward) and 4A volleyball (SoHi) and Region III swimming. ASAA has authorized the continuation of regular season regional play and regional championships through November 21st.
The district will re-evaluate on Monday, October 26th.
The KPBSD’s total shut-down of activities coincides with the Mat-Su School District halting high school competitions through October 30th, although Mat-Su is allowing practices under high risk protocols.

The Central Peninsula, as of Monday’s count, has jumped to 75 positive cases in the past 14-day recording period, recording 25 cases in the past three days.
The Southern Peninsula, as of Monday’s count, moved into the high risk level with a 14-day count of 22 cases, increasing with eight cases in the past three days.
The Eastern Peninsula remains in the high risk “red” level with a total of 11 cases a the current 14-day count. recording only two cases in the past three days.
