The high school football season ended prematurely for teams throughout Alaska with the exception of the Anchorage School District; which developed a season-ending playoff format for six of the ASD’s eight football playing schools.
The East Anchorage Thunderbirds shut-out the Bartlett Golden Bears 41-0 in the ASD championship game on Saturday at East Anchorage High School. East competes the 2020 football season with a 7-0 record (including a forfeit by Eagle River).
The playoff was not a sanctioned Alaska School Activities Association (ASAA) championship; ASAA cancelled all state championship events fall the fall on October 13th.
The playoffs excluded Colony, Wasilla and Juneau from the Division I Chugach Conference, so the ASD playoffs are not a true Division I championship. The playoffs format also excluded a Division II Eagle River, which is part of the Anchorage School District (Eagle River was put on a 14-day quarantine prior to the tournament).
