Kenai Borough Assembly Meeting Tonight; Open To The Public

Author: Anthony Moore |

Tonight is the next Kenai Peninsula Borough Assembly meeting and, whether attending in-person or virtually, you’ll notice the Assembly Chamber looks differently.

Johni Blankenship, Borough Clerk for the Kenai Peninsula Borough spoke to KSRM, saying that the Assembly Chamber was renovated, “That was a project through the CARES Act to be able to remodel the Assembly Chambers to be able to allow for in-person meetings to be able to get the group in there, to be able to socially distance and have a surface that is very easily cleaned. That’s how it started. We also wanted to do audio/video upgrades to allow us to do a hybrid of in-person and remote participation for people to be able to do whatever works for them comfortably. Basically the Assembly Chamber was completely demolished and we worked with KNA Design to create a new base layout which allowed for everybody to be outside of that 6-foot for the Assembly administration. Basically everything had to be redone. We have monitors everywhere and cameras. We have a Zoom integration. We have new audience chairs that are easily cleaned. Pretty much everything is brand new.”

With tonight’s Assembly meeting, Blankenship did confirm to KSRM, “It’s open to the public. Obviously we’re also encouraging the public to, if they’re not comfortable being here and they’re not wanting to wear masks or socially distance, nothing is required, there’s only recommendations, that they can also participate in the meeting remotely through the Zoom platform.

On tonight’s agenda meeting, a COVID-19 vaccine update from Dr. Kristin Mitchell, as well as a resolution requesting Senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan, and Congressman Don Young to take actions exempting COVID-19 relief funds from federal income taxation.

The meeting will be held through Zoom. The meeting will also be held in-person from the Betty J. Glick Assembly Chambers, Borough Administration Building, Soldotna. COVID-19 mitigation protocols will be observed.
