The City of Kenai is providing round-trip transportation to individuals receiving COVID-19 vaccinations in Kenai.
The requirement is that you must have a Kenai address in order to be transported to vaccination clinics in Kenai. It’s being done at no cost to the individual. City Manager Paul Ostrander explains, “As vaccines are rolling out, and are available, particularly for those groups, seniors 65 and older, there are seniors in our community that either don’t drive or can’t drive, and for those folks this transportation voucher will offer them the opportunity to get travel in either an Alaska Cab or with CARTS from a Kenai address to a Kenai vaccination clinic. Folks that are eligible, anybody that lives in a 99611 area and is traveling to a vaccine clinic in the city of Kenai will receive round-trip transportation through this program.”
Ostrander explains how round-trip transportation will be offered through Alaska Cab and CARTS, “We did contact all of the taxi cab companies locally, and Alaska Cab was the cab company that chose to participate. CARTS, we felt, was important to include as well because a lot of our seniors and others utilize CARTS. That’s the transportation company that they’re familiar with. Including them allowed an opportunity for those folks that primarily use CARTS to continue to use them in this program.”
The program is being funded up to $5,000 through CARES Act money. It will be offered on a first-come, first-driven basis until the budgeted funds run out. Participants will need to provide proof of vaccination to the provider for rides to and from the vaccination location.
