The Soldotna Stars girls basketball team finished its first run through the 2021 five-team peninsula basketball schedule undefeated with a 65-24 victory over Nikiski on Saturday in Nikiski. The SoHi boys dropped a fourth-straight and continue in search of a win after falling to Nikiski 43-36.
SoHi Girls 65 – Nikiski 24
The Lady Stars defense continues to lead the Stars through the early regular season as SoHi’s full court pressure powered the girls to a 65-24 victory over the Bulldogs. The SoHi girls lead 34-14 at the half and lead by forty points early in the fourth quarter to institute a running clock.
Rhys Cannava lead the Stars with 16 points; Josie Sheridan added 12 points. Nikiski’s Lillian Carstens was held to a single field goal and six points for the game.
Nikiski Boys 43 – SoHi 36
A 20-point, second quarter which featured five three-point baskets for Nikiski pushed the Bulldogs to a 22-14 lead over the Stars at the half. A lead Nikiski would never relinquish.
A slow offensive start for Nikiski, no field goals in the first quarter, staked SoHi to an early 9-2 lead after one quarter. In the second quarter, Simon Grenier made Nikiski’s first field goal, a three-pointer, and opened the flood gates for Austin Stafford to record four 3’s in the quarter. SoHi closed to within six points in the fourth quarter; the Bulldogs recorded their first victory of the regular season.
