Author: Anthony Moore |

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game want to remind hunters that the ptarmigan season in the Game Management Unit (GMU) 15C region north of Kachemak Bay and north of the Fox River, which covers the region of Homer north to Kasilof, closed on January 31.

According to an advisory announcement, the early season closure for the northern portion of GMU 15C is a result of action taken by the Board of Fish and Game due to conservation concerns.

Seen in this image below is GMU 15C:

Game Management Unit 15 consists of a portion of the Kenai Peninsula and adjacent islands draining into the Gulf of Alaska, Cook Inlet and Turnagain Arm from Gore Point to the point where longitude line is 150° 00′ W. crosses the coastline of Chickaloon Bay in Turnagain Arm, including Kalgin Island, and including that area lying west of longitude line 150° 00′ W. to the mouth of the Russian River, then southery along the Chugach National Forest boundary to the upper end of the Upper Russian Lake. It includes the drainages into Upper Russian Lake west of the Chugach National Forest boundary, and all seaward waters and lands within three miles of the coastlines.

The season is open in the remaining portion of GMU 15C until March 31, with a bag limit of ten per day, twenty in possession.

For ptarmigan bag limits and seasons dates throughout the state please refer to page 141 of the 2020-2021 Alaska Hunting Regulations, which is available online here or from local area offices and vendors.
