Three weeks remain in the basketball regular season and the week opened with Soldotna traveling to Seward and the Nikiski Bulldogs hosting Kenai on the Bulldog’s Senior Night on Tuesday.
SoHi Girls 38 – Seward 32
The Soldotna girls stand at 10-0 on the regular season; however, faced a strong test from the Seward Seahawks (2-7) on Tuesday in Seward: the Lady Stars offensive struggles continuing as SoHi again relied on the strength of their defense in a 38-32 victory over Seward.
Seward held a 10-7 lead after one quarter and a 16-15 lead at the half over the Lady Stars in Seward on Tuesday. SoHi took the lead in the third quarter 26-23 and extended the lead to six points at the final buzzer. Morgan Bouschor lead the Stars with 13 points and Josie Sheridan added 11 points. Shelby Siemanski topped the Seahawks with 11 points.
Seward Boys 37 – SoHi 32
After a 17-point first quarter, the Soldotna Star boys managed only five points in the second and three points in the third quarter as Seward took the lead in the third quarter and held-on for a 37-32 victory. The Stars lead 22-19 at the half and managed only one field goal and a freethrow in the third quarter. Ethan Sewell lead the Stars with 9 points and Trey Ingalls scored 12 for Seward. The Stars fall to 2-8 on the season and Seward improves to 6-3.
Kenai Boys 74 – Nikiski 68 2OT
The Nikiski Bulldog boys, on the strength of a 23-point, fourth quarter pushed the Kenai Kardinals to double overtime on Tuesday night in Nikiski. Kenai holding-off the Bulldogs 74-68.
Kenai and Nikiski were tied at 57-57 after regulation play. With just over two minutes remaining in the first overtime the Kards and Bulldogs traded three-point baskets with Nikiski’s Austin Stafford giving Nikiski a three-point lead; then Kenai’s Jacob Kvasnikoff answered to re-tie the game at 62-62. Drew Handley made a lay-up for Nikiski and Jacob Kvasnikoff scored for Kenai and the game went to a double overtime tied 64-64.
Kenai outscored Nikiski 10-4 in the second overtime for the victory. Stafford lead the Bulldogs with 18 points; Jordan Kvasnikoff scored 23 and Jacob Kvasnikoff added 19 for the Kardinals. The Kenai boys improve to 9-2 and Nikiski drops to 1-9.
Nikiski Girls 35 – Kenai 31
The third time was the charm for the Nikiski girls as the Bulldogs defeated Kenai 35-31 on Nikiski’s Senior Night, avenging two earlier losses to the Kardinals. Nikiski held a slim 17-16 lead at the half and outscored Kenai by seven in the third quarter for a 30-24 advantage. Lillian Carstens scored 10 for Nikiski and Kinlee Jefferys added 9. For the Kardinals, Emma Beck poured in 19 points.
