The 2021 ASAA/First National Bank Alaska Nordic Skiing State Championships will feature three days of competition on the trails at the Government Peak Recreation Area outside of Palmer with individuals and teams from throughout the state of Alaska gathering, many for the first time outside of their respective school districts.
The Government Peak Recreation Area and Mat-Su Ski Club have taken on the hosting role for the state championships following the Municipality of Anchorage Emergency Order 18 with restricts athletes from outside of the municipality from participating within the Municipality of Anchorage.

Government Peak – Palmer / February 25-27
Qualifying Standards: All schools that have Nordic ski programs are invited to send one boys team of 6 individuals and one girls team of 6 individuals. Schools can send less than a complete team if they wish.
Team members are to be selected by the head coach with no specific ASAA qualifying criteria other than normal eligibility rules.
Race Format: The state championships are held over a three-day period with one race for boys and one race for girls each day. The races include two individual competitions and one relay competition.
Race order:
Day 1 – Individual Classic Race (7.5k boys, 5k girls)
Day 2 – Individual Freestyle Race (7.5k girls, 10k boys)
Day 3 – Team Relays (4 x 5k boys followed by 4 x 3.5k girls)

Government Peak-Mat-Su Ski Club
The Mat-Su Ski Club (MSSC) is hosting the state championships at Government Peak Recreation Area, in cooperation with the Alaska School Activities Association.
There will be no indoor facilities for teams
Parking: GPRA has limited parking. We are asking all schools, if possible, to shuttle boy and girl athletes
at separate times. This will decrease the number of athletes at the venue and allow for athletes competing
in the 11am race to leave prior to the 2pm race. If all athletes are brought up to the venue via bus,
athletes will need to use the bus as their warming area. No spectators allowed in the stadium. Spectator
maps will be available on MSSC website.
Waxing Facility: The team staging area will be outside only.
● Each team will have designated space.
● Tents must be open air – no walls.
Seeding skiers: All athletes must be registered per ASAA forms and
ASSA guidelines listed on the forms on the web.
Relay substitution: can be done the morning of the relay one hour before the start of the relay. Only the
6 official members may participate on the relay.
Seeding: Coaches will place their skiers in the seed of their choice one through six for the interval start
race seed. Due to the pandemic we are having the Fastest out First seeding. Skier one will go out first,
seed two will go out second, etc. Coaches are responsible to seed their skiers. Coaches have the option to
change their seeds at the Tuesday coaches meeting. Day 2 will be seeded based on results from the
classic race. If a skier does not finish due to force majeure, the Jury will seed the skier in the safest spot.
Relay Start Times will be based on the combined time from Days 1 and 2.
Warm Up and Course Closure: There will be a designated time for warm up for each race before the
start of the race. 11 a.m. athletes will warm up prior and 2 p.m. athletes will be allowed on the course after the
completion of the 11 a.m. race to warm up. The course will close to skiers 10 minutes before the start of the
race.

Awards: There will be no formal awards in person.
Awards will be announced over the PA. Coaches will pick up the awards. Formal awards for: the top 10
from the first two races; and relay skimeister ; and overall skimeister will be awarded at GPRA.
